The Only Woman in the Room
“If only people had been willing to look behind 'the only woman in the room' to examine the person she was beneath, they might have seen a woman capable of greatness, and not only on the screen.”
~ Marie Benedict: The Only Woman in the Room
The amazing, true story of Hedy Lamarr who was forced to reinvent herself multiple times to survive... while providing us with a glimpse into some of the challenges that she faced as a beautiful and intelligent woman whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication!
In 1942, she co-invented a device that helped make possible the development of GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi technology!
Lamarr and her partner, composer George Antheil, were granted a patent for their invention in 1942, but the US Navy wasn't interested in applying their groundbreaking technology until twenty years later when it was used on military ships during a blockade of Cuba in 1962. And even then Lamarr's part in its development has been largely overlooked and her efforts weren't recognized until 1997.
Imagine if society was prepared for women to be intelligent, and not just beautiful back in 1942…how different would our world look today?
